About Digital Collections

HKUST Library Digital Collections delivers publicly available digitized materials from the HKUST Library. Most of these materials originate from the Library’s Special Collections, with additional content from the University Archives and Library Artwork Collection.

Digitization of selected collections began in 2013, made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Ko Pui-shuen. The collections presented here highlight significant stages in the development of civilization in both the East and the West, as well as their points of intersection. They include:

  • Antique maps of China produced by European cartographers dating back to the 15th century
  • Maps of China published in the early 20th century, alongside those created by the Colonial Government of Japan in Taiwan
  • Travelogues of China written by Westerners from the 16th to the 19th centuries
  • Rare books on the history of science written by revolutionary figures including Euclid, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Fourier
  • Rare thread-bound books published from the Qing Dynasty to the early 20th century, revealing the human landscape of China during that era
