A superb example from a French text edition of Hendrik Hondius' world map, first published in 1630. Note that California is shown as an island, (one of California's earliest appearances on a world map). The border decorations include representations of the four elements (fire, air, water, and earth) and portraits of Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptolemy, Gerhard Mercator, and Jodocus Hondius.
